I have changed my vote on 1147 because of the words of my friend and colleague, Representative Oscar Braynon. I originally cast this vote because I believed that in a time of deep budget cuts and a sagging economy, there were more important and pressing issues facing the state than the adoption of a state anthem. My feeling that there are more important matters facing our state has not changed, but in a personal conversation moments ago, Representative Braynon conveyed his hurt feelings and concern over a vote that keeps hurtful language as a matter of state record. His feelings, as well as those of my other colleagues in the House of Representatives and around the state far outweighs any concern I have over our misplaced priorities. I change this vote out of respect for him and his family.
