FLORIDA HOUSE REPUBLICANS FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS OF THE FEDERAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE
|
Once again, Florida House Republican leaders have shown their inability to clearly read The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and understand its benefits to Florida. A disparaging statement on Wednesday night by the House Majority Office about legislation sponsored by Florida House Democrats to help businesses, employers, and Florida’s economy needs to be addressed. The Recovery Act was set up to deliver an immediate dose of stimulus to the states, and promised to deliver funds to any state that enacted reforms and promised to set up the expanded benefit within a year of enactment. If House Bill 1333, sponsored by Rep. Kevin J.G. Rader (D-Delray Beach), had passed by the end of the 2009 legislative session, funds easily could have been delivered to a trust fund before the June 30th deadline, which would have saved Florida employers close to $150 million in taxes in January. What the House Majority Office has failed to understand is that Florida can petition the U.S. Department of Labor for $444 million in stimulus so long as the benefits are effective within one year of the enactment date of the legislation. So, regardless of the October 1 effective date on House Bill 1333, had the bill passed in May, and Florida had applied for the $444 million by June 1, Florida would have gotten the money by June 30,, 2009. For more information, read the U.S. Department of Labor, UI Program Letter 14-09.
