Welcome to the Capitol

It is our sincere pleasure to welcome you to Florida’s Capitol!

Whether your goal is to meet with your State Representative, participate in a committee meeting, or simply view Florida’s legislative process in person, the Florida House has a number of resources to make your visit as safe, productive, and informative as possible.

If you are infected with COVID-19, are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, or are in quarantine you may not enter House spaces and should reschedule your visit for a different time. Also, for your safety you may not use restricted seats in committee rooms and other places, nor congregate in House open spaces and seating areas.

Parking

When you first arrive to the Capitol, you may notice that parking is limited, especially during committee weeks and Legislative Session. However, there are a number of paid parking options in downtown Tallahassee including the Kleman Plaza parking garage, on-street metered parking and paved lots. To make your arrival as smooth as possible, download this parking map and plan ahead.

Meeting with your Representative

If your goal is to meet with your State Representative, we recommend contacting their office prior to your trip to secure an appointment. While legislators are always happy to meet with constituents, schedules often fill up quickly, so requesting a meeting before you arrive could make your visit that much easier. Use the “Find Your Representative” tool on our website to locate your representative’s office location and contact information. To find the contact information of a specific staff person or committee, download a copy of the House Directory.

While at the Capitol, you should take the necessary COVID-19 safety precautions in accordance with your health conditions. You are also expected to observe masking and additional safety measures if requested by a Member for their individual office or by the Chair for their office suite. Alternatively, you may be accommodated through phone calls or video conferences. In-person meetings with visitors are at Members’ and staffs’ discretion.

Attending a Committee Meeting

Committee meetings present visitors with the opportunity to offer public testimony on legislation before the committee. Please visit “Attending a Committee Meeting” for important information before you attend a committee meeting. For a full schedule of committee meetings that is updated in real time, visit the “House Schedule” page on our website. If this is your first time addressing a committee, you may find the “Effective Communications With Your Representative” publication helpful, which outlines common ways to address lawmakers, general etiquette and other important practices.

Legislative Session

When the House is in session, visitors are encouraged to view the proceedings from the House Gallery, which is located on the 5th floor of the Capitol building, sitting just above the House Chamber. This is one of the most exciting ways to see Florida’s laws being discussed and debated, especially for student groups. Please remember to help us maintain a professional atmosphere in the House Gallery by refraining from applause or flash photography.

Tours of the House Chamber

The Chamber and other House rooms are currently not available for reservation by outside groups; however, school groups interested in Chamber tours or mock sessions may submit a request to use the House Chamber outside of interim committee weeks. For more information, please contact the Office of the Sergeant at Arms at (850) 717-5700.

We look forward to seeing you in our State Capitol. If there is anything we can do make your visit more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to contact the House Office of the Clerk at 850-717-5400 or officeoftheclerk@myfloridahouse.gov.
