Project Description: |
Center for Preparedness
Broward Community College is proposing a training initiative that will compliment its current program, and support the efforts of the local Regional Domestic Security Task Force, the State Work Group for Domestic Preparedness, and related federal initiatives.
Training related to homeland security concerns has traditionally focused on awareness and basic response, however, the war on terrorism can be fought smarter if our responders and support staff are equipped with the latest information and trained in ways that eradicate and suppress the threat of terrorist incidents.
Designed to be multidisciplinary and span multijurisdictional boundaries, Broward Community College's proposed initiative will focus on three Tiers, Prevention and Interdiction, Preparedness and Response and Mitigation/Recovery. Each program tier can be implemented separately and still have substantial positive impact for local communities. Implemented as a three tiered program or as stand alone programs, the proposed program will:
• raise awareness, promote coordinated responses, and increase information sharing among several different disciplines.
• promote public safety and work toward suppression of terrorist activities through intelligence and prevention training
• provide businesses with the tools to improve infrastructure and increase safety
• prepare communities to respond to terrorists events; and
• coordinate community recovery efforts that address the needs of victims, responders and the citizens it serves.
• Provide tactical training in the areas of building searches, search and recovery, response and decontamination
An addition to the current Institute of Public Safety will be needed to implement this program. This addition will be used for classrooms, labs and tactical application rooms. First responders using this center will have the opportunity to put course concepts into action through practical application.
