Explanations of Vote:

  • Eskamani -
There is no evidence to suggest that Florida is engaged in business with Iran, and there is no evidence to suggest that this policy will even have a meaningful impact on reducing foreign terrorism. In contrast, the staff analysis admits that this bill will have an "intermediate" impact, and that it may also conflict with the federal commerce clause. It should also be noted that the United States has placed some of the most intense sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran, targeting specific entities and political/military leaders. These sanctions have been in place for decades. With that said -- this policy proposal is not only redundant, but it is politically motivated to boost Governor DeSantis as he prepares for this Presidential debate. I would not be surprised if he signed this bill into law while campaigning in Iowa. Jest aside, as an Iranian-American and the only Iranian-American elected to any public office in Florida, I have concern that such legislation could have a ripple effect to impact innocent Iranians in the diaspora who are not terrorists or funding terror. I cannot, and will not, add to anti-Iranian sentiment which has unfortunately only worsened in our country.
