Explanations of Vote:

  • Driskell -
I strongly and unequivocally condemn anti-Semitism in all its forms and fully support Israel and its right to defend its citizens. That is why I was honored to vote for House Resolution (“HR”) 9C, which makes this stance clear. That is also why I voted against HR 13C (as did all but two of my colleagues). HR 11C, however, unfortunately, contained “poison pill” provisions that I could not support. HR 11C has a provision that runs directly contrary to U.S. foreign policy, as articulated by the President, which calls for humanitarian pauses in the fighting. The recent hostage release underscores the wisdom of this approach. Additional provisions of HR 11C, which implied ending all humanitarian assistance directly to civilians and prohibiting free speech on college campuses, are not things that I want to see happen. The horrific attacks by Hamas are indefensible. They must be held accountable for what they’ve done. It is important that we stand united against such heartless murder and destruction. We must also redouble our efforts to combat rising anti-Semitism here in Florida. These are the reasons I was proud to vote for HR 9C to support Israel and fight anti-Semitism.
  • Eskamani -
Though there were parts of this resolution that I fully support, most especially sections that are condemning antisemitism and the rise of antisemitism on college campuses, I was taken aback by confirmation via the resolution sponsor that parts of this resolution were calling for an end to all humanitarian aid to Palestinians impacted by the war between Israel and Hamas. This sets a dangerous precedent for future conflicts; and it is the responsibility of the United States to protect innocent life. That may mean the delivery of aid, which is also an opportunity to build trust with those impacted in conflict and hopefully help to influence long term peace, too.
  • Hunschofsky -
I voted “yes” today because I believe in the right of Israel to exist. I also believe we must condemn in the strongest terms the horrific terrorist attacks on innocent Israeli families by Hamas on October 7, 2023, attacks that also killed innocent American citizens. We must call out the antisemitism that is at the root of these attacks. There must be no equivocating on these facts. Israel must defend itself, but we must also recognize war alone is never going solve this conflict. Most of the victims in this conflict started by Hamas are innocent —innocent Israelis and innocent Palestinians —innocents who will also bear the long-term wounds in the aftermath. The right to live in peace, the right to self-determination in one’s own government, the right to civil liberties, and the right to live under rule of law is at the heart of who we are as a country, and we should stand for that for every living person on this planet. We must demand that our leaders find a solution that ensures these rights exist for both Israelis and Palestinians, or else we risk this conflict continuing repeating again.
